The History of Massage
by Robert Calvert

The History of Massage, written by Robert Calvert in 2002, is the first comprehensive history of massage from its origins to the present day from throughout the world. Knowing your history is critical for professionals who use massage in their work.

From the people of ancient Greece to the tribes of the Pacific Ocean and the Americas, massage has been a significant element in medicine, midwifery, folk healing, and athletics. Yet the rich presence of healing touch is rarely present in the telling of human history. Now Robert Calvert, founder of Massage Magazine, offers a history that spans the globe in its exhaustive exploration of the important role of touch therapy in the lives of the world's people.

Hundredth Monkey ConspiracyThe Hundredth Monkey Conspiracy
by Robert Calvert

The Hundredth Monkey Conspiracy, a novel written in 1995 by Robert Calvert, is about a global network of therapists who wanted to heal the planet through touch. “History has shown us that indeed people can be led by their charismatic leaders,” Calvert writes in the novel. “Why is it not plausible then that a conspiracy of the universal mind be carried out by individuals working in concert, for a healed and integrated world?" This intriguing plot makes for a great read in this hard to find book. Please note that there are only a few copies remaining in print.

Dr. Swift Poster -
The poster illustration is dated 1837 and depicts Dr. Swift purportedly giving a massage at home. From the text on the poster, it seems clear that Dr. Swift is advertising massage at home and perhaps by giving the street address, he's advertising medical services at his office as well. One piece of evidence that Robert and Judi Calvert found out about this poster was that the word 'massage' was used in the English language prior to the conventionally accepted date of 1876. This poster suggests that massage was in common usage as an in-home therapy during this time in the United States
.

Rheumatism Turkish Bath Poster -
This image is an artist's rendition of an actual Turkish bath in Turkey. This poster is an advertisement for Doctor Charles H. Shepard, offering services at his midtown facility in Brooklyn, New York. The poster was also used as a magazine advertisement appearing a number of times in the journal Medical Advance. Historically, massage has been closely associated with almost every facility that utilizes natural or domestic water in it's therapeutic regimes. Today, the Turkish bath can still be found on some parts of the United States, as well as in Europe, but most have been replaced by the ever increasingly popular spas around the world.

Pompeian Beauty Poster -
This poster is an original Pompeian Beauty poster advertisement dating about 1914. This particular poster was the start of a national advertising campaign to find the American Pompeian Beauty. This product being advertised was Pompeian Massage Cream, a facial cream for cleansing, moisturizing and nurturing the skin. The product was promoted to both men and women. Some of the more interesting ads are aimed at barbers or men who frequented barbers. The Pompeian Massage Cream was a revolutionary new product when it was first introduced in the late 19th century because it replaced the previous rolling massage creams. The rolling massage creams literally meant they would roll up into small balls so the fingers would roll across the skin to cleanse and moisturize. They did not contain lanolin to help the skin absorb the creams. Later advertisements, however, began touting the moisturizing benefits even while continuing with the idea of massaging the cream on the face for health and beauty. The Pompeian Massage Cream advertising campaign was evident in many publications for almost 50 years, but is no longer in business. Judi Calvert, the founder of The Hands-On Trade Association has found over 100 advertisements on Pompeian Massage Cream. She even found the jars that the cream came in, and a flat metal tin of the product that was sent for free to potential customers.

No Armoring Poster -
The image of this poster is intended to convey in dramatic fashion how massage removes the armoring of stress and tension from the body, spirit, and mind. The armored soldier, represents how many of us first come to the massage table, layered with tension and stress. Then, through the power of touch from a pair of caring and skilled hands, our armor gradually falls away. To anyone who does this work for a living it is a truism. And anyone who has experienced a professional massage will attest to the relief of tension and stress that feels as if a heavy layer of armor has been removed during the massage.

Massage at Sunset Poster-
This poster was produced from a painting that was done by Donna Harris in 1997. The original picture was taken in 1985 for the very first issue of Massage Magazine created by Robert and Judi Calvert. The original picture was taken on the big island of Hawaii. Robert is giving Judi a massage. The photographer only had film for one more picture and the sun was setting so this was the magical picture for the first cover of Massage Magazine.

Skinship Journals

Skinship Journal was published quarterly from March 2000 thru 2001 by Robert and Judi Calvert. It explored the whole realm of touch and critical part in human relationships and development. "Skinship" is a Japanese-coined word not found in the English language. It is an English word used in the Japanese culture denoting feelings of relatedness and affection between two people, particularly a mother and a child, caused by hugging, touching, and other forms of physical contact.

Skinship Journal explores the healthy touching relationships that take place between humans, often involving skin-to-skin contact, but just as often while fully clothed. Hugging, touching and other forms of physical contact that are healthy and supportive of the human condition are what skinship and Kinship Journal are all about.
